Backstory

Most Eladrin are born and raised in the Feywild as their place of origin, but Quartz has few, foggy memories of their earliest years. At a very, very young age they found themselves wandering on the streets of Calimport, lost and confused. Luckily, they were quickly found by a kind older woman who was both stunned by Quartz' appearance and worried for the seemingly abandoned child. This older human woman, Sumaya, ran a bathhouse and courtesan's quarters. The establishment was entirely run and staffed by women, who were all too ready to dote upon little Quartz. They taught them traditional arts such as playing music and dancing, something Quartz took to well. This is how they first came to love performance, and they'd watch their “older sisters”, as they called them, with wonder. The women also taught Quartz how to read and write. They loved the theatrics, they loved playing music, and most of all they loved to dance. They were inspired as well by street performers they would see on trips to the market with Sumaya, who had a looser and more energetic style of dance.

They spent many years here, until they were about 10-11 years old. This is when they encountered Roman Estaar and his father, one of the wealthy pashas of the area. Roman was instantly enamored with Quartz. He convinced his father to make an offer for Quartz--enough money that Sumaya couldn't justify turning it down. And Sumaya knew Quartz would be well cared for in a pasha's estate, though it broke her heart to let Quartz go.

Quartz was told they would be a companion to the pasha's son, and that they were. While Roman was older than Quartz, they got along well. Roman even allowed Quartz free time away from him, so they were still able to see their old friends.

Quartz would practice their dance and music, and perform for the Estaars and their guests often. At around 12, on a visit back to the brothel Sumaya began to teach Quartz the art of the sword and they would continue this practice for many years. Sumaya felt that the least she could do for her charges was make sure they were equipped to defend themselves.

However as Roman aged he grew more possessive of Quartz, no longer allowing Quartz as much freedom. During these times Quartz would sneak away from the estate to go and visit the brothel again. This possessive behavior of Roman's created a rift between the two that only got wider when he began to assert that he owned Quartz, an idea they were unwilling to accept. They thought of it as being in the employment and service of the Estaar family, but nothing else.

Still Roman insisted Quartz owe him. The final straw came when, during Quartz' late teens, Roman revealed that he meant to marry Quartz. This made Quartz furious and they refused. There may have been an altercation, something where a concealed knife surfaced and happened to scar Roman's pretty face...Quartz likes to be cheeky when recalling this incident nowadays.

The old pasha, Roman's father, was a stern but gentle man. While he would not directly oppose his son's views to his face at first, he came to think of Quartz as one of his own children and after this altercation, when Quartz was around 15-16 years old, he was willing to let Quartz go off on their own. If Roman had tried to use the argument of ownership, his father reminded him coldly that he had 'paid' for Quartz, not Roman, and it was the pasha who would get the final say on when their service to the family was over.

Not long after being let go from the Estaar's, Quartz caught the attention of Jonas Goodnight, director of the Oasis Theater in Little Calimshan (a small district in the outer city of Baldur's Gate).
